Sony Ericsson is already working on a new Xperia smartphone if rumours are to be believed on the Internet.

New photos purporting to be the next generation Sony Ericsson smartphone have surfaced even though the first version, the Xperia X1 isn't due out in the shops until September at the earliest.

Called the X5 - what happened to the X2, X3, and X4? - the new model will supposedly feature an 8-megapixel camera with autofocus and flash, 8GB of internal memory plus the usual array of connectivity options like Wi-Fi, HSDPA and GPS.

Other rumoured specs include a 3.2-inch touchscreen display.

Pinch of salt or genuine?

We will keep you posted.

  • If there were any truth to this, which given the outings of other manufacturers recently leads me to believe it could very well be; it would certainly force Nokias hand with regard to addressing that 5mpx sensor in their 'premium' N96.

With a bit of luck they'll also include a proper flash on a future 'N98' revision aswell. Which would be very welcome.

  • I was wondering if I should wait for the Xperia X1 or wait for a fully touch screen device from Sony since they did say the Xperia brand was going to be a line of phones not just one. This gives me new hope. I've always had WM devices usually PPC-6700 or other HTC phones because the slide out keyboard is amazing. I just got use to my 2G iphone however and realize I can do with an on screen keyboard to make my device slimmer and lighter so the X1 would be a step backwards in terms of weight and size. So I'd be all for it if this X5 ran WM and had the same specs if not better than the X1. I just hope they go all out and do a real touch interface not just a quick front end. Posted by Lex, USA
